Windows Registry 101 - Error Basics
The windows registry is an important component of a Windows system because it comprises the information that is required by the hardware and software installed on your system to carry out various operations. Registry errors are usually generated when over time, your registry gets filled up with several unwanted, obsolete, and invalid entries. This unwanted information, damages the registry and gives rise to frequent system errors and causes system crashes.
Discussed here are some registry tips that will help you keep your Windows Vista registry free from unwanted information.
Tip #1: Use a Registry Cleaner: Today, there are several third-party registry cleaner tools, such as RegCure and Registry First Aid available on the Internet that you can use to perform a deep and thorough scan of the windows registry. Using your third-party tool, you can not only repair several registry errors, but also fix several corrupt and damaged registry entries in it to resolve registry DDL errors ,, runtime errors, and driver errors.
Tip #2: Perform regular registry scan: Repairing the registry just once is not enough. You need to perform regular registry repairs to keep it safe from damage. The frequency of registry scans usually depends on how you use the system. If you just use it for working on word processor applications and other simple tasks, then scanning once in three months is fine. However, if you frequently install/uninstall programs, download freeware tools and games from the Web, or use heavy applications on the system, then your registry is more vulnerable to errors. In this situation, the frequency of scans must be much higher. It is also recommended that you perform registry scans when you:
• Install and uninstall programs.
• Perform antivirus and antispyware scan.
• Clean the hard disk.
• Perform regular system maintenance.
Tip # 3: Defrag the registry: You can use your registry cleaner tool to defrag the registry. Defragging helps in the following two ways:
• Reduces the registry size by weeding out unwanted, space-consuming empty registry keys left behind when keys are removed from the registry during program uninstallation and registry repair process.
• Re-indexes the fragmented registry files to make them contiguous. Both these activities help in speeding up the registry, which, in turn, enhance the performance of your system.
Tip #4: Create regular registry backups: Because the windows registry is an important part of your Windows computer, it is important that you make regular registry backups. These backups are useful in restoring the registry if it gets corrupt, and starts hampering your computer operations. You can easily make a registry backup using the backup and restore feature of your registry cleaner tool. Many good registry cleaners make automatic registry backups before performing the system and repair process. This way, if the registry repair process does not occur as desired, you can simply restore the registry backup to its earlier state. Other than backing up the registry regularly, you must also perform registry backup before:
• Performing registry scan and repair.
• Installing and uninstalling programs.
• Directly making registry edits.
• Making any major system configuration change.
The health of your windows registry is important to keep your Windows system at an error-free and high-working performance level. This is the reason why you must perform regular registry maintenance using a reliable and efficient registry cleaner tool.
